Dear Member,

We hope you have all bought your tickets for the Finalists’ Concert of the 2010 Competition being held at the Theatre Royal, Bury St. Edmunds at 7.00pm on Monday 12th July. If not, it’s not too late to book them through the Theatre Royal Box Office on 01284 769505 or by using their on-line service at www.theatreroyal.org.

The heats of this year’s West Suffolk Young Musician were held back in February, producing the following finalists. All will be performing in this year’s Finalists’ Concert.

Level 1

  • Piano - Shahana Sengupta,
  • Wind - Gemma Gray,
  • Brass - Michael Peters,
  • Voice - Miriam Storey,
  • Strings - Joseph Bailey.

Level 2

  • Piano - Ben James,
  • Wind - Katy Rochford,
  • Brass - Josh Firman,
  • Voice - Ellie Brown,
  • Strings -   Lewis Tingey.

Level 3

  • Piano - Andrew Gayfer,
  • Wind - Sarah Johnson,
  • Brass - Rachael Fletcher,
  • Voice - Will Hann,
  • Strings - Tom Ping.

The adjudicators for the evening will be Suffolk musicians Rob Rogers (chairman), Anna Appleton and Cathy Cass. As in previous years, although the winners of Level 1 won’t be competing for the title of West Suffolk Young Musician, you will have the opportunity of hearing them perform, whilst the adjudicators make their deliberations.

The funds raised during this last year, including the donations of our Members, have been put to good use in further developing the Competition and improving the quality of our advertising and image!!. Don’t forget that up-to-date information can always be found on our web-site wsym.org.uk. We always welcome comments and feedback from our audiences and if you feel you would like to make such a contribution, please do get in touch.

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, we are still looking for someone who would like to become our Members’ Secretary to keep records of membership and produce a newsletter like this, two or three times a year, to keep everyone up-dated. If anyone feels able to help, please let us know.

It is now a year since you became a Member of WSYM and we hope that you will feel able to continue your valued support of this musical opportunity for our local young musicians. Application cards to renew your Membership (£5 recommended) will be available at the Theatre Royal concert or alternatively contributions can be made directly to: - West Suffolk Young Musician, Sort Code 08-92-99 Account Number 65373387.

At the time of writing we are planning our AGM, which will be held in the Autumn term. We will write with details of the venue and date when they are confirmed and hope that you will put the date in your diary and come along to help plan for the future and elect the committee for the 2011 competition.

Many thanks again, on behalf of our young musicians,

Neil Carlson - Chairman
